Intertwined & Living Cuisine & still too damn busy

February 20th, 2008

I am in a sea of books that I haven’t been able to read yet! I stole a peek at Intertwined (Lexi Boeger’s new book) and was totally inspired by the wild yarn creations, and I read some of the glossary in Living Cuisine and now I really want to buy cherimoyas, even though I doubt they can be found in the stores around here. I can’t wait for some time to read, and experiment with raw food…

Other stuff I’ve been too busy to acknowledge: Jean of the Assertive Cancer Patient sent me some of her cool Boycott October pins, which I shared with my mom. Thanks, Jeanne!

I’ll post more when I have time: for the time being, it’s a nuthouse around here!

A year in the can

February 10th, 2008

Yes, kids, we’re coming up on a year since the boobs were cut off (Feb.27th, I think)(I can’t believe I forgot the date already)…it’s hard to believe. There’s a lot to do, since the Second Annual Boob-Eating Day is right at the start of March, and I’ve got to make healthy, vegan and/or raw alternatives to the pink cupcakes from last year’s festivities (although they were delicious…thanks again, Marisa!).  In lieu of actually getting off my lazy, overworked ass to do anything official, I’m just gonna wax rhapsodic about things I am happy about for a moment:

1. In the past year, I’ve seen my friend Jacqueline’s small, defiant business start to blossom, watched her on tv, and got to know her as a person, and that’s been awesome.

2. I’ve gotten connected to a world of wonderful women who are blogging about cancer & life, and who knock me out with their eloquence, courage, and honesty.

3. I haven’t missed my boobs even once. Really.

OK, done. And unfortunately, so is this post, as I am exhausted from running around in the park today. :-)

Rawr!

February 2nd, 2008

I found a pretty cool site recently called giveittomeraw.com, which is for raw foodies, and it’s giving me a lot of new recipes, information & insights, so I thought I’d share it with you lovelies.

If you’re looking for me there, go here:http://www.giveittomeraw.com/profile/pocketina

Not much else to report, just doing mucho work, so the updates are scattered for the time being…but I *did* get cool mail today & will share that tomorrow. :-)

wiki’d sweater

wicked sweater

I finally finished a Wicked! This sweater pattern’s been haunting me for almost 2 years. I tried it in two different cotton yarns, and frogged it both times, and then had a conversation with a very experienced knitter about cotton, and she gave me the idea that maybe the pattern wasn’t to blame, but my fiber choice. She was right!
This is done in Cascade 220, and it fits a little loosely on me, but the shaping keeps it from looking floppy. I like oversized vesty things and this works perfectly. In the pic, I’m wearing it over a black cashmere turtleneck & it looked pretty good! A nice, transitional piece for late winter into spring, and then into fall again.

In other news, I’ve been making various salad dressings with Vegenaise, and I can’t say enough about this shit. It’s awesome. It tastes just like mayo! I heart Vegenaise. Oh, and pineapple. I’ve had about half a pineapple this afternoon. Something about detoxing myself from the effects of the Horrible Cold: I wanted cole slaw, pineapple, and a big handful of dried cherries. Must be needing some nutrients, so I went with it.

I also made the evilest daikon radish pickles on the face of the Earth. They’re so salty, gingery, and vinegary that your hair stands on end, but you want more of them anyway. I think my fingers will be swollen tomorrow, they’re THAT salty. Evil!

It was a good weekend.

Size 5 jeans! And dumb-maybe-cancer-maybe-not shit.

January 9th, 2008

Holy crap! I wanted to get some jeans that fit, since I now only have one pair that doesn’t fall off.  I took a bunch of size 7s, hoping they’d fit, into the dressing room, and had to go back and get 5s instead. Now, I’m pretty sure this company’s jeans run a little big, so it may be a paper victory, but whatever. Today, I wore size 5 jeans again.

I showed the maybe-lymph-node-lump below my ankle to my endocrinologist, who believes it is likely a cyst, but still thought that the oncologist should look at it, and get an ultrasound if need be. I’m pretty sure I’m being totally paranoid, but you never know. The strangest of lucky accidents got my cancers diagnosed & dealt with: I’ll be damned if I have a similar chance again, and blow it by ignoring this thing.  But obviously, I’m hoping it’s a cyst. Hope. Hope. Hope. Repeat as needed.

New Year’s Resolution: a procrastinator’s promise

January 6th, 2008

Hi!!

Sorry: I’ve been holding out on all of you, keeping my silly ramblings to the confines of my brain, and writing very little. I’ve been doing so much, it just seemed like a good idea to take a wee break from the blog, but I’m back now, and resolved to post more regularly again. Consider it a New Year’s Resolution.

What’s new:

Tomorrow’s the day of my endoscopy,  since I’ve recently been blessed with a hiatal hernia & wicked heartburn, and my battles to control it are not working very well. I’m hoping for the best, but we’ll see. My new-found change of diet was helping a lot, initially, but it didn’t continue, and I wonder how to manage heartburn with a predominantly vegetarian-vegan-raw food diet.

The diet’s been a HUGE change in my life, otherwise, and all positive besides the heartburn that refuses to go away. Basically, I’ve: lost 15 pounds since November, and am only 5 pounds away from my high-school weight, without ever feeling hungry or deprived, and that’s an amazing thing to experience. Also, I don’t get as sick as I used to. I had two brief colds since November: one lasted  one and a half days, and the other lasted about 1 day. It’s like it tried to establish itself, and then it suddenly disappeared. Awesome!

Also, my lymphedema continues to be a mere shadow of its former self, which means that I’m now finally seeing the normal shape of my arms & chest & upper back, and I can do arm exercises without puffing up, too. :-)

I’ve been knitting up a storm, too, but with my usual luck: lots in the frog pond (ripped back to balls of yarn again) and little on the clothes hangers. I’m doing a cardigan that’s making me happy right now, though, so we’ll see how that goes.

More later.

I promise!
